    Notes:

I'm just home from a visit to Edinburgh, and wondered if you knew this about our ancestor Ann Sarah Herriott, whose portrait I found in one of the boxes at my mother's house after she died last year. The back of the photograph reads, "Ann Sarah Herriott, wife of Benjamin Jones. A descendant of David Harriott and Helen Campbell who came to this country from Edinburg (sic) Scotland 1685." The photo was taken October 1, 1871. Ann Sarah Herriott lived from 1804-1875 and was a great-great-granddaughter of immigrant David Harriott.
In Edinburgh, there is a school that is more than 400 years old called George Heriot's School. Turns out, George was a goldsmith to James VI of Scotland (who later became James I of England) and his wife. He moved with them to London, died wealthy and childless. He left his fortune to establish a school for "fatherless bairns" in his hometown. The school still operates, in fact, J.K. Rowling sent her children there, the teachers wear robes, and it is believed to be a model for Hogwarts.
From sources there I find that our ancestor David seems to have been descended from a half-brother to George.
